World Vegan Day

It’s World Vegan Day today. The day was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, who was the President & Chair of the Vegan Society UK. This year marks the 78th anniversary of the term ‘vegan’, as well as the establishment of the Vegan Society.

A vegan diet is based on plants (such as vegetables, grains, nuts, and fruits) and foods made from plants. Vegans do not eat foods that come from animals, including dairy products and eggs. The term ‘vegan’ was coined in England in 1944 by Donald Watson. In 1951 the British Vegan society extended the definition of veganism to mean “the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals”.

An animal product is any material derived from animals, including meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, honey, fur, wool, and silk. Other commonly used, but less well-known animal products are beeswax, bone China, carmine casein, cochineal, gelatine, isinglass, lanolin, lard, rennet, shellac, tallow, whey, and yellow grease. Ethical vegans will not use animal products for clothing, toiletries, or any other reason.

Fair Squared Menstrual Cups are certified by the Vegan Society and meet their three standards:

1.       The manufacturer and/or producer of the certified product may not use any animal by-products in their product or in the manufacture of the product.

2.       The development and/or manufacture of the product must not include or have included animal experiments. Neither in the company’s own name nor that of other parties that control the company.

3.       The development and/or production of genetically modified organisms must not include or have included genes from animals or substances derived from animals. Products whose genes have been modified must be labelled as such.

The Menstrual Cups are made from Fairtrade rubber and certified by Fair Rubber e.V. They are made from natural latex that is obtained from the sap of the tropical tree ‘Hevea Brasiliensis’.

The Period Cup does not absorb the menstrual blood but collects it. The Cup can be used throughout the menstrual cycle, no matter how light or heavy the flow is. The cup can hold more than three times the amount of blood than a regular tampon, giving longer protection! It is reusable and can easily be cleaned by water.
