 How to use: Condoms

1. Consent

First things first - you should always have consent from the other person before you have sex, this doesn’t take long to ask.

2. Check the use-by date

Before you put on a condom is to check the use-by date. If it is not in date, dispose of it and use a new one that is in date. Checking the expiration date on the wrapper only takes a second.

3. Open carefully

Be very careful when opening the packet. Gently push the condom to one side of the paper wrapper, and tear from the corner on the other side, which has more room. This will avoid damaging or ripping the condom. When you’re handling the condom, keep it away from sharp nails and jewellery to ensure it doesn’t get ripped or put a hole in it.

4. Check the condom is the right way up

Next, check the condom is the right way up – the teat end should be pointing up. Hold the teat with your thumb and forefinger. If you put it on the wrong side by accident, throw the condom away and get another one. Note that precum contains semen, if you find that you have got precum on the wrong side of the condom and continue to use it, the effectiveness can be lost.

5. Apply teat end up

Now we’re ready to put the condom on, make sure the penis is fully erect. Leave about a half an inch of extra space at the tip of the condom by pinching out any extra air between your thumb and finger. Trapped air can make the condom rip.

6. Roll the condom on

Now, simply roll the condom to the base of the penis, ensure to smoothen out any air bubbles around the shaft.
